When it comes to picking the teams for the Nor Cal portion of the state playoffs, I am not going to act like I am some kind of expert, especially about the teams outside the area. Heck I don’t consider myself an expert for the local teams and the North Coast Section Playoffs. Having said that, it appears the local teams did alright.
As expected, the Cardinal Newman Girls got the best news. Less than twenty four hours after dropping the NCS Division 4 championship game, they were named the No. 1 seed in the Nor Cal Division 4 bracket.

Maybe it was bad timing for the Cardinal Newman Girls to have one of the best local teams of all time. Maybe the Salesian Girls team had one of its best teams at the same time. Although Salesian has been so good the last couple of years, it is hard to tell the difference. Either way, there was a big difference between the two teams, at least on this day.

March 5, 2016

On December 1st the Salesian Girls defeated Middletown 82-37. Yes that is the same Middletown team that at one time this season was the’s No. 2 ranked team and ended up tied for NCL I championship.
The result wasn’t surprising and taken as normal stuff. It was Salesian being Salesian.
Salesian meets the Cardinal Newman Girls in the NCS Division 4 Championship game. The game is this afternoon at 5 pm at Albany High School.

I hope that the same people who run some of these high school sports playoffs don’t have much to do with the more important things in high school life, like their education, we could be in trouble in the future.
I have ranted here about the playoffs here for one reason or another. It is something I don’t take pleasure doing, because we are talking about high school sports. I like to think I am looking out for the kids.
The basketball playoffs actually have some rules that are kid friendly, well seemingly are. You can lose in the sectional playoffs and still have a chance for a state championship playoff berth, which can give you another game.

With all the High School action going on it is easy to forget that both the SRJC teams are in the second round of the state playoffs. Like the High School playoffs, round two of the SRJC playoffs are on Wednesday night. Both teams are on the road.
We haven’t given them the attention they deserve because of lack of man power, but they get some now.
No. 9 SRJC (19-10) at No. 1 San Francisco (28-1)…7:30 pm
This isn’t the best timing to give the SRJC Men attention.

The North Coast Section Playoffs are moving to the semi-final rounds. Locally there are six teams left and there is a guarantee that there will be at least one team for the NCS final round. That is because in the Division 6 Boys Bracket, Archbishop Hanna is meeting Anderson Valley.
Of the six teams it is split right down the middle, three Boys and three Girls. Division 6 is the only bracket that has more than one local team.

Saturday night belonged to the home teams. Actually locally the whole weekend belonged to the home teams. There were fifteen games involving local teams in Round Two and the home team went 14-1.
Montgomery fans have to love that stat.
There are six local teams still going, split right down the middle between Boys and Girls teams. One school has both the Boys and Girls team going and that is Montgomery. All the teams left qualify for the Nor Cal playoffs, no matter what they do in the next round.

February 27, 2016

The Montgomery Vikings have two teams qualified for the Nor Cal playoffs.
One is going after what rates as one of the upsets of the season, which happened to be one of the games of the season. The other wasn’t a bad game either.

As we move into the second round of the NCS playoffs here are some numbers.
The local teams in the first round went a combined 16-21. The Boys won seven of eighteen, the girls nine of 19. There is one more team that isn’t included and that is the Windsor Boys, who had a first round bye.
