JUNE 2024

Next stop: Rhode Island

Windsor Golf Club’s Director of Golf Jason Schmuhl has competed in a lot of tournaments over the years, as a standout high school player, a successful collegian and then on to the pro ranks.

But at the end of June, he will be teeing it up in a new and unique venue, the U.S. Senior Open in Newport, R.I.

The U.S. Senior Open is in Newport June 27-30th.

“The qualifying round was at Richmond CC and it was very windy,” said Jason. “Slow start . . . I was 3 over par through seven holes and then played the last 11 holes 3 under, including a birdie on 18 to get in.”

But when the event was over and the scores were counted up, Jason had qualified for his first-ever U.S. Senior Open.

Jason is a PGA Class ‘A’ Professional with more than 25 years of teaching experience.

A Sonoma County native, he was inducted into both the Analy High School and the Santa Rosa Junior College Hall of Fame.

He played golf for the University of San Francisco and earned a degree in Marketing from Sonoma State University.

Turning professional in 1997, Jason attained his PGA Member status in 2002. Jason, a Titleist/Footjoy-sponsored professional, is a four-time NCPGA Player of the Year award recipient (2018, 2015, 2010 and 2008), five- time NCPGA section champion and remains an active golf competitor, regularly participating in NCPGA tournaments and other events.

His golf resume also includes berths in numerous PGA TOUR events, including the 2010 and 2018 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits and Bellerive Country Club, the Fry’s.com Open, the Safeway Open, the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, the Reno-Tahoe Open,
the Barracuda Championship, the WEB.COM TOUR’s TPC Stonebrae Championship and the Fresh Express Classic.

Jason has also earned entry into 13 PGA Professional National Championships, placing 4th in 2008 and most recently qualifying for the 2023 Senior PGA Championship in his first year of eligibility.

He has held three course records including a 62 at his home course, Windsor GC, a mark previously held by PGA Tour veteran David Duval.

But despite all those accomplishments, no U.S. Senior Open . . . until now.

I’m excited about playing in the US Open,” he said. “I’ve never qualified for a USGA event before, never been to Rhode Island.

“For a change, I’m going to just have fun and enjoy the experience.”

Witt wins Lake County Senior Amateur

Hidden Valley Lake superintendent Billy Witt carded a -2 under par 70 to win the 27th annual Lake County Senior Amateur Championship at Buckingham Golf and Country Club.

Witt won the tight match with Clear Lake High golf coach Juan Lopez who finished two strokes behind with an even par 72. Witt and Lopez are the two most long-term success stories in the 31-year history of the Lake County Amateur Golf Circuit and both men are inaugural members of Lake County’s Golf Hall of Fame
