SOCO CLASSIC TTL copy

The year 2014 is ending tonight.
So is the Basketball Tournament barrage.
If you are the directors of the Sonoma County Classic, you can’t ask for anything better than what you are getting for this years finale on New Years Eve.
The host school against the team everyone loves to beat.
The Sonoma County Classic Championship features Cardinal Newman and Piner, the No. 1 and No. 4 ranked teams in the opening YSN365.com rankings.
This is a rivalry that has some history.  The two coaches, Tom Bonfigli of Cardinal Newman and Mike
Erickson of Piner have some history themselves.  They are two of the longest tenured coaches in the area.

Piner carter
Piner will have a huge size disadvantage tonight when they host Cardinal Newman. Isiah Carter (11) is in the post for the Prospectors at just 5′ 10″

Maybe the most memorable game between the two was on February 21st, 2009.  That season both teams were in the NBL and this was the league’s post season championship game at SRJC.
Piner was pretty good that season.  The Prospectors had a twenty win season and tied for second in the NBL race.
Cardinal Newman was special.  They went into the game 27-0.
Piner won the game 55-46.

This championship game tonight is a junior version of this.  Cardinal Newman goes into the game unofficially 10-0.  The 0 part of that record is official.
Not only is this for the Sonoma County Classic Championship, but with the other results of tournament play, the winner could go into league play, the No. 1 ranked team in the area.
It is a nice way to end the December tournament barrage.

Registration is now open, click here for more information:

Montgomery lost three of four in the tournament and is a very average 5-5 on the season.  They ended the tournament with a three game losing streak that will look better come playoff time when the seedings are announced, because of the schedule they had through the tournament.
They aren’t done with the pre-league part of the schedule yet. The Vikings host College Park on Friday Night.  College Park has been a powerful Division 2 team over the past few seasons.  This season they are in Division 1 and have a record of 8-3.
Then on Saturday, they are at Freedom who is another Division 1 team.
Then the stage will be set:
NBL opener: Wednesday, January 7th…Cardinal Newman at Montgomery.
