Basketball tournaments have been happening since the opening week of December and they won’t stop through the holidays. This week’s Brett Callan Memorial Tournament highlights the round of tournaments in the redwood empire. This will be the 11th tournament, and the second without late Gaucho coach James Forni. Local teams are Casa Grande, Analy, Cardinal Newman, Montgomery and Petaluma.
Opening day matchups are Montgomery vs Petaluma, 3:30. Miramonte vs Cardinal Newman, 5:00. Analy vs Washington (SF), 6:30, and Tamalpais vs Casa Grande at 8:00.
Montgomery comes off of a 4th place finish in the Russ Peterich classic. They played Liberty, and Monte Vista tough before falling in both of those games. Petaluma played up at the Rose City tournament at Cardinal Newman. They fell to MCAL teams Redwood and San Marin and finished 6th. They’re 3-2 on the season.
The defending tournament champion Miramonte will have their hands full with a much improved Cardinal Newman team. Newman might have Damian Wallace back to add shooting and great perimeter defense to their team.
Defending SCL Champion Analy comes into the tournament 5-1 on the year. Their only loss came to Sacred Heart Cathedral at the Red Brown tourney at Drake high school. Aidan Toner-Rodgers and Jordan Armstrong look to take care of Washington (SF) in hopes of capturing a tourney championship.
The host Casa Grande Gauchos are 2-3 on the year after finishing 1-2 in the McKinleyville tournament. Another win they had was over Vintage. Casa Grande looks to get back to the Brett Callan championship game for the first time in a couple of years.
