Coming off one of the most exciting wins in local post season history, the Cardinal Newman Girls continue their run at a State Championship. They are now three games away, and the next game is Tuesday when the No. 1 seed hosts No. 4 Sacred Heart Prep. The tipoff is at 7 pm.
Over the past two seasons the Cardinal Newman Girls have been used to dominating teams. In the second half of the second round game against Scotts Valley, they had to be dominating or the season would have been over. Cardinal Newman trailed 32-16 with two minutes to go in the first half. The rest of the game they outscored Scotts Valley 45-13 to take a 61-45 win. It is the kind of win that will live in their minds forever, no matter what happens from here on.

It would be a better ending to the story that will grow over the years if it led to a lead to a state championship.
While most people expected the Cardinal Newman Girls to be still playing, this is pretty heady stuff for the next opponent which is Sacred Heart Prep. The private school that was established in 1898 is 21-6 on the season. This is the third season during the Max Preps era that they have hit the twenty win mark. The last one was three years ago when they went 22-10. They made the Nor Cal playoffs that season as a No. 8 seed and lost to Salesian in the second round 74-43.
This season, the school won the Division 4 Central Coast Championship defeating Scotts Valley in the championship game 52-51. Also, on its way to its 21-6 record, they have a 58-43 win over Woodside Priory. That is the team that beat Cloverdale at the same time that Cardinal Newman was making its epic comeback against Scotts Valley.
The win over Woodside Priory was part of an 11-1 start. They finished tied for third at 5-5 in the West Bay League, which is a pretty good league. The league still has four teams going in the state playoffs including league champion Pinewood who is the No. 4 seed in the Open Division. Second place Menlo is behind No. 2 in Division 4 and Eastside Prep, the team they ended tied for third with, is the No. 1 seed in Division 5. Sacred Heart Prep comes into this game with a five game winning streak. Four of the wins have been playoff games including a 72-54 win over Central Valley in the Nor Cal second round. Like Cardinal Newman they had a first round bye.
Power rankings wise, as it will be as long as they keep going, Cardinal Newman is favored. Cardinal Newman is ranked No. 30 in the state, Sacred Heart Prep is at No. 113.
Cardinal Newman gave their fans a scare on Saturday. They would like to get back to normal in this game.
No. 4 Sacred Heart Prep (21-6) at No. 1 Cardinal Newman (28-5)
