San Mateo (Sept. 28, 2015) — Riverside City College took good advantage of a bye as other contenders faltered over the weekend. So the Tigers remain No. 1 among California Community College Athletic Association football teams for a fourth week in the JC Athletic Bureau’s poll of football coaches.
Riverside (3-0) was a unanimous No. 1 selection and begins National Central play Saturday at El Camino (2-2). Long Beach moved up from fourth to No. 2, followed by Canyons and Golden West – all 4-0. Falling back after losses were formerly No. 2 San Mateo and No. 3 San Francisco – leaving only No. 6 Sequoias unbeaten among National (state championship) Division teams in Northern California.
Those NorCal teams close out non-conference play this week and then take a bye before opening league play. Top games, including two clashes between top ten ranked teams: No. 8 American River (3-1) at No. 5 San Mateo (3-1) and No. 9 San Francisco (3-1) at No. 7 Modesto (3-1). Also: Santa Rosa (2-2) at No. 6 Sequoias (4-0), No. 11 Laney (3-1) at De Anza (1-3), No. 12 Diablo Valley (2-2) at Sierra (1-3), No. 15 Fresno at Reedley (3-1).
Southern California National competition moves into a second week. Top Games: National Central: No. 2 Long Beach (4-0, 1-0) at defending state champion and No. Mt. San Antonio (2-2, 1-0). National Northern: Bakersfield (0-4. 0-1) at No. 3 Canyons (4-0, 1-0). National Southern: No. 14 Fullerton (2-2, 0-1) at No. 4 Golden West (4-0, 1-0). American Division, Mountain: East Los Angeles (2-1, 1-0) at No.16 Victor Valley (4-0, 1-0), No. 25 San Bernardino Valley (4-0, 1-0) at Desert (1-3, 1-0). Pacific: No. 24 Santa Monica (3-0, 1-0) at Glendale (1-3, 0-1).
Northern California American Division play also continues. In the Golden Coast League: No. 23 Hartnell (4-0, 1-0) is at Merced (2-2, 0-0). In the Pacific 7, Los Medanos (2-2, 1-0) is at No. 21 Contra Costa (4-0, 0-0).

He is averaging 125 yards/game to lead the North’s National Division. In the same game: Diablo Valley soph WR CJ Cornwell (5-11, 182 from California H.S., San Ramon) — 17 receptions for 265 yards and 3 TDs. He leads the state with 46 receptions and 646 yards.
DEFENSE: Orange Coast soph LB Mark Cushing (6-0, 220 from Hold H.S., Mo.) –12 tackles (10 solo) in Pirates’ 31-23 win over Fullerton.
