The annual Rose City Tournament tips off on Thursday, with a little different meaning this year. The host school will be newcomer to the tourney, Maria Carrillo, but this is still Cardinal Newman’s tourney. This will likely be the first time the full team will take the court this year, since the football season ended last Saturday night.
There are some interesting matchups in round one of the tourney. The best one will probably be Petaluma vs Santa Rosa. Petaluma is 1-1 the the year, and they return a lot of key pieces from last year’s team. SCL Co-Defensive Player of the year Brendan O’Neill is back for the Trojans, as are key assets Jack Anderson, Devin Gotschall, Robbie Isetta, and Whitaker Ellis. The Panthers are 1-3 so far, playing in the San Rafael tourney last week. They return a few key players as well. Last year, Santa Rosa defeated Petaluma 56-38.
Other games of the night are on the SR-Petaluma side of the bracket, Cardinal Newman vs Kelseyville. On the early side of the bracket, host Maria Carrillo and San Marin kick off the tournament at 3:30, followed by Redwood vs Roseland Prep.
Last year, Cardinal Newman defeated Windsor in the Rose City tournament Championship.
