This Saturday Neat Package is a little like the weather. It includes a mixture including the first weekend of high school basketball as tournament fever has begun.

With all the tournaments going on, unofficially the count is 14, and the wide range of where they are being played it is basically next to impossible to give justice with everything going on.

So what you will get over the next couple of weeks in the Neat Package is the top five.

This is a test shot.   Things could change and it will be easy to miss something, but like on a missed shot, there will be rebounds in a recap come early week.

No. 5: Weather Issues

When the weather is a headline it usually isn’t good.

Most of the country would be laughing at what we call a snow event, but that is what we had Friday Night as the recent cold spell turned into the wet stuff and in other areas the white stuff and it did affect some sporting events.

A Girls tournament in Willits, which included the Cardinal Newman Girls, has been cancelled because of a road closure on 101.

It also affected the Boys Tournament in St. Helena because Willits couldn’t get to play its second round game.   Willits will play Piedmont at 12:30 today in the first of two games that the teams will play.  The winner moves to the championship game and the loser to the third place game.

Also the North Coast Section Division 4 championship football game between Fortuna and St. Mary’s has been postponed.   The game was schedule for a Saturday Afternoon 1 pm kickoff at Humboldt State.   The NCS decided to postpone things early because of all the road closures heading north.

The makeup date has not been announced, but the guess is it will be early in the week.

No. 4: Revenge

Last year El Cerrito was the undefeated No. 1 seed in the Division 3 playoffs and dropped the championship game to Marin Catholic 31-28.

This year the two teams met again and it was Marin Catholic who played the role of the undefeated No. 1 seed.

El Cerrito made thing even by taking a 54-38 win over Marin Catholic to win the school’s first ever North Coast Section championship.  Adarius Pickett rushed for 255 yards and four touchdowns.

El Cerrito led 41-3 in the third quarter and now will wait and see if they will move onto to the Division 3 Nor Cal championship game which seems like a good bet.

Marin Catholic ends the season 12-1.

No. 3: Hot Starts

The opening game of the season for St. Vincent might turn out to have the highest scoring individual game of the year. Zac Pierson scored 47 points in an 88-77 win over Valley Christian in the opening round of the 56th Redwood Classic in Boonville.    The tournament has some of the top Division 5 teams in the state.

He wasn’t the only one off to a hot start.

Montgomery’s Alec Raven scored 30 points in the opening round win over California in the Viking Classic at Montgomery.   In round two he did even better, scoring 40 points in a win over Campolindo.   The Vikings needed most of his 40 as Campolindo rallied from a 13 point first half deficit to take the lead in the fourth quarter, before Montgomery took a 56-48 win.

Elsie Allen’s Joe Hoeup scored 66 points in two wins in the first two rounds if the Kelseyville Tournament.   Hoeup scored 22 of 36, which included an eight 3 pointers, in the first half of an opening round 66-56 win over South Fork.  He followed that up with six 3 pointers on his way to a 30 point game in round two, which was a 72-54 win over Kelseyville.
