Times are pretty busy at SRJC these days.    It’s getting close to finals time,  preparation for graduation and regular events like that.

Also going on is the not so normal of the sports world.   The school’s Baseball and Softball teams are both in the second round of the state playoffs.   Actually that might be a first in school history.

One thing is for sure, it hasn’t happen in a least a decade.  That is how long it has been since the softball team has been in the playoffs, period.

This playoff thing is more of a normality for the baseball team.   They won the State Championship in 2005 and made the State Final Four last season.

The SRJC Baseball team will be at home for the next round of the State Playoffs

This year the SRJC Baseball team finished second in the Big 8 and is a No. 3 seed in the Nor Cal State Tournament.  In Round One last week after dropping the opening game, they won the first round best of three series over the College of San Mateo 2-1, to raise their record to 27-11 on the season.

Next up they host another Best of three series, starting Friday at 2 p,m against Cabrillo College.   As a No. 7 seed Cabrillo, won its best of three series over No. 10 Sacramento 2-1.   The lone loss was a 13 inning Game Two 6-5 loss.

The state tournament reseeds from round to round and Cabrillo is the No. 6 seed of the final eight.   They also won the Coast-Pacific Championship, are 23-16 on the season and won seven of eight going into the playoffs.   That was after digging out of a big hole after a 1-6 and 3-9 start to the season.

Game 1 of the best of three series will be Friday at 2 pm.  Game two is Saturday at 1 pm, with Game 3 Sunday at noon if necessary.    The winner moves to the Super Regionals next weekend, which is a four team double elimination format.   That is the last step before the State Championship Final Four, which is also a double elimination format.

The double elimination format begins this week for the SRJC softball team.   They are the No. 6 seed of the eight teams left in the Nor Cal portion of the bracket and No. 3 of the four teams in this part of the tournament.    The tournament will be held at Solano College.     SRJC will meet Sierra College in its first game, which begins Friday at 4 pm.   That is the second game of the day.   The first game is between No. 7 Fresno City and No. 2 Sierra.   Sierra being the lowest seed, gets the home field advantage.
