CSM No. 1 After 51-6 Win at Butte

College of San Mateo is the state poll leader for the first time — following a 51-6 win at defending state champion Butte. CSM, with a 6-game win streak since a 28-20 loss at Butte in 2013, garnered 11 first place votes from coaches and totaled 395 points to outpace Mt. San Antonio (385).
Mt. SAC topped four ballots after beating then No. 18 Ventura, 27-3. Riverside held the No. 1 spot for just one week, falling to No. 8 after losing to Grossmont, 38-28.
Conference play gets underway on several fronts Saturday, including in the tough National Central: No. 2 Mt. SAC hosts No.16 Chaffey, No. 6 Long Beach plays at LA Harbor, and Citrus goes to No. 11 El Camino.
Other key Southland openers: National Southern: No. 15 Grossmont at No. 12 Golden West, No. 7 Fullerton at Orange Coast, Saddleback at No. 17 Palomar. National Northern: Ventura at No. 9 Cerritos. American Mountain: Victor Valley (3-0) at No. 14 Southwestern (3-0). American Pacific: No. 23 Glendale at LA Pierce.
