On the second day of the NCS basketball playoffs, the local scene was basically saved by Cardinal Newman and the Division 6 teams.
By pure numbers, Division 6 had a pretty good shot. At the start of the night, both brackets had seven local teams. The schedule also had two games each of local vs local and two teams with a first round bye in each bracket. Eight of the sixteen teams left for the second round are local teams.
The second game at Cardinal Newman may have been predictable, but was the headline game of the night. That was the Boys game in which Cardinal Newman pulled away late for a 69-43 win over Roseland University Prep. The win was a milestone victory for coach Tom Bonfigli, his 700th win of his coaching career, a career that start in 1980. It was his 480th at Cardinal Newman. The other wins were at Justin Siena, who happens to be the Girls team coming to Cardinal Newman on Saturday night.
