Feature Image by Sumner Fowler Article by Ryan Giacomini (Petaluma High School Class of 2022) COVID-19 has put Petaluma sports on hold, but recently California gave the go ahead for high school football to start their season. The first two rankings of the year were exactly the same. This week most positions have changed..
No. 1 Cardinal Newman (10-3) (Last Week No. 1)…This isn’t one of the changes. They began league play much like they went through it last season with two one sided wins. They also had a one sided win over West Campus, a good Division 4 team from Sacramento.
No. 2 Middletown (9-4) (5)…This is high for an NCL I team but it is earned. They have double digit wins over Casa Grande and Analy. If it wasn’t for how good Cardinal Newman is, this could be the first NCL I No. 1 team in YSN365.com history. The bad news is that Middletown, like Cardinal Newman, is in Division 4.

With the skies blue, with nary a cloud in sight, and the temperature often flirting with 70 degrees, it may be tough to talk about “winter golf,” but we indeed are in the middle of winter, with rain possible this week, so I wanted to find out from some golfers what they feel is the best way to play golf in the winter weather and how to maintain your game.
Tom Isaak, who operates highly successful CourseCo, which includes Sea Ranch and Foxtail as well as 25 other courses in California, Oregon, Washington and Texas, says to “hit balls between showers . . . and putt.”
He said to find courses that drain well and have good maintenance programs that assure golfers a decent round, even during the rainy season. If the course isn’t playable, it’s not really worth the time and money spent.

In a night things went pretty much as expected in the local games (at least in the games that were reported), there was quite a milestone in the local High School Basketball world.
The Montgomery Girls basketball team defeated Rancho Cotate 57-35. This is not a game that stands out more than any other game and yet it stands out more. The win was the 500th win for Coach Steve Bell coaching career at Montgomery High School.

Moments after the first meeting between Cardinal Newman and Montgomery, a 55-35 win for Cardinal Newman, a Cardinal Newman fan mentioned to me missing the guard can’t be that big of a difference can it?.
He got his answer last night.
Comparing those two games you might get your definition of a Most Valuable Player.

Both teams come into this one 3-0 in NBL play. Casa has forward Will Crain back from an injury, Windsor is coming off a huge upset win over Cardinal Newman.
