SANTA ROSA, CA — Cardinal Newman has officially turned the page to a new era in its football program, naming Kenny McMillan as head coach while bringing in Sean Embree as associate head coach and offensive coordinator for the 2026 season.
McMillan, who has served as the program’s wide receivers coach, co-offensive coordinator, and the school’s associate athletic director, takes over the Cardinals with strong internal familiarity and a proven coaching background. A Serra High School alum and Cal Poly graduate, McMillan previously coached at Cal Poly before spending five seasons at Santa Margarita, where he led running backs and served as head coach at both the freshman and junior varsity levels.
“I am truly blessed and grateful for the opportunity to serve as the next head football coach at Cardinal Newman High School,” McMillan said. “This program has been built on a strong foundation over many years, and I’m excited to honor that legacy while working with our players, coaches, and community to take it to the next level.”
The Cardinals also add major experience to the staff with Embree, whose résumé includes a national championship as a player at Colorado and NFL experience with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Embree has also spent time as a head coach and general manager in European professional leagues and most recently served as associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Santa Margarita.
Cardinal Newman Athletic Director Monica Mertle praised the pairing of McMillan and Embree, pointing to a balance of leadership and high-level experience that positions the program for continued success.
The move comes following the departure of Frank McManus, who leaves the program to pursue an opportunity outside of coaching. McManus helped guide the Cardinals through a successful stretch and leaves behind a strong foundation.
With a blend of continuity and elite-level experience, Cardinal Newman enters the 2026 season poised to remain a contender in the North Coast Section.
