A Division 2 Quarterfinal match up had the #4 Maria Carrillo Pumas face off against the #5 Marin Catholic Wildcats.

The Pumas gave the starting job to Bryce Veler (Jr.) and he would record 2 strikeouts in the first inning, but Marin Catholic’s Dylan Joyce (Sr.) would get 2 strikeouts of his own. After the first the score remained tied at zero.

After two quick outs in the top of the second, the Wildcats would get Frankie Donnelly (Jr.) on with a blooper to shallow center. Donnelly would get to second on a passed ball and appeared ready to score on a jab shot to center, but he would be tagged out in a rundown between third and home.

The Pumas bats would come alive in the bottom of the second. Bryce Cannon (Jr.) would start things off with a leadoff double to right center and a textbook bunt from Veler down the third base line would put runners at the corner with one down. Robby Hilario (Sr.) would be hit by a pitch to load the bases and Evan Magelitz (Sr.) would bring in a run with a single. With the bases still loaded, Zach Smith (So.) would record a walk, bringing in another run and KC Kelly (Sr.) knocked in another with an RBI single. Marin Catholic would turn two to end the inning and get out of the bases loaded jam, but not without the Pumas getting a couple runs across. After two, Maria Carrillo led 3-0.

Veler would record two more strikeouts in the top of the third as the Wildcats bats failed to come alive. Joyce’s day would end after giving up an RBI double to Cannon, hitting another batter in Kody Kent (Sr.) and giving up one last RBI single to Magelitz. He would finish his day on the mount with 2 2/3 IP, 4 K, 3 BB, 7 H & 5 ER. The Wildcats would bring Vaughn Mauterer (Sr.) out for relief efforts and he did would register an inning ending strikeout with the very next batter.

Veler continued dealing on the mound and managed a second straight three up three down inning. The bottom of the fourth was just as quick as the top, with 2 walks turning in a double play and a fly out to end the frame.

The top of the fifth inning gave life to the Wildcats after a double and a passed ball on ball a ball four left runners on the corners. Veler would attempt a double pickoff move but would be called for a balk, or illegal pick off move, resulting in the runner at third scoring and the runner at first advancing to second. Veler would hit another batter before ending the inning with the Pumas still on top 5-1.

Mauterer would continue to shut down the Pumas bats as he recorded a three up three down bottom of the fifth. The top of the sixth was just as quick, Veler would hit another batter but didn’t let it affect his overall performance. Heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Pumas still led 5-1.

Marin Catholic would end Mauterer’s day by bringing in Maxwell Manning (Jr.) for the bottom of the sixth. Mauterer finished with 2 1/3 IP, 1 K, 2 BB, 0 H & 0 ER. Manning would make quick work of Carrillo’s first two batters before giving up a single, but picking the runner off at first moments later.

Carrillo would send Veler back out to the mound to finish the job but he would hit the first batter, bringing his total to three, and a fielder’s choice would move the runner to second. The runner would advance to third on a groundout, meaning Marin Catholic’s season came down to one last batter with a runner at third. A throwing error would score a run and leave a man on first. Maria Carrillo led 5-3.

Two singles later would load the bases for Dylan Joyce who was looking to avenge his shaky start with a big time at bat. Joyce would foul off 4 pitches in an at bat that seemed to last five minutes before finally knocking in two more runs with a single. The Pumas now led 5-4 with two outs and runners at first and second. Veler would eventually settle down and get the final out on a groundout to first.

Final Score: Maria Carrillo 5, Marin Catholic 4.

The Pumas advance to the NCS Semifinals where they play Casa Grande on Wednesday.
